A pioneer graduate of Umanand Prasad School of Medicine invested about $150,000 to set up two private health clinics in Fiji called Goodlife Medical Centre.

Doctor Romika Lata started her private clinic at Nausori Town in February, 2022, and expanded to Labasa Town in April, 2024.

Originally from Olosara, Sigatoka, Nadroga, she believes a private clinic offers the opportunity for patient-centred care, providing high-quality treatment with potentially more time allocated per patient.

“Our collaboration with Oceania Hospitals has enhanced our services, bringing specialist care to the doorsteps of Nausori and Labasa,” Dr Lata said.

“This partnership enables us to provide a higher level of medical expertise and cutting-edge diagnostic services, ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care.”

The vision at Goodlife Medical Centre is to streamline this process by providing comprehensive medical services under one roof.

The company’s goal is to serve as the primary point of contact for patients’ healthcare needs, offering them initial consultations, treatments, and essential diagnostics.

“Overall, the entrepreneurial journey has been a blend of hard work, perseverance, and moments of joy and satisfaction,” she said.

Challenges and experiences

Dr Lata said setting up a private clinic involved significant planning, investment and taking risks.

She said the joy and satisfaction she experienced when her patients left the clinic happy and satisfied with their medical treatment were immeasurable.

Dr Lata said her entrepreneurial journey were filled with challenges, and rewarding achievements.

“Overall, the entrepreneurial journey has been a blend of hard work, perseverance, and moments of joy and satisfaction,” she said.

“The challenges have been learning opportunities, and the successes have been rewarding, making the journey worthwhile. What sets our clinic apart is our unwavering commitment to providing exceptional, patient-centred care,” she added.

She said most patients often found themselves having to visit multiple locations to address their various health needs.

This can be time consuming, stressful, and sometimes confusing, leading to delays in receiving the necessary care.

Advice to youngsters

Investing in a private clinic or healthcare business can be rewarding but comes with challenges.

“My key advice includes focusing on patient care, maintaining ethical standards and being prepared for the demands of running a healthcare facility,” she said.

More advise

  •  Prioritise patient satisfaction and quality care.
  •  Implement feedback mechanisms for continuous improvement and invest in digital health tools to stay current with technology.
  •  Uphold patient confidentiality and ensure the quality of care is never compromised.

“These ethical standards are crucial for building a trustworthy and reputable clinic. Starting a private clinic requires careful planning, dedication, and a passion for healthcare.”

By focusing on these areas, she said young entrepreneurs could build successful and impactful healthcare businesses.

“The men behind my success are my father and husband,” she said with smile.

“Of course, my cheerleading squad includes my mother and sister, as well as my supportive friends and family.”

She completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2013 and Post Graduate Certificate in Family Medicine in 2022.

Before joining Oceania Hospitals in May 2017, she worked for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services serving Lautoka Hospital and Sigatoka Hospital.

Future plan

“At Goodlife Medical Centre, our commitment to enhancing community health extends beyond traditional medical services,” she said.

She is looking at launching preventive health programmes and wellness initiatives to attract and benefit a broader patient base.

These programmes will focus on proactive measures to prevent illnesses, promote healthy lifestyles, and improve overall well-being.

“As a family physician at heart, I believe in knowing the health status of every member of your household, including your pets. This approach ensures that we can provide comprehensive care tailored to the unique needs of each family member, fostering a healthier and happier community.”
