Patients are speaking out after claims that some doctors are charging for sick sheets, a practice confirmed by authorities as illegal.

Concerns have surfaced from sources who say certain doctors are treating sick sheets as something to be sold, rather than issued as part of normal medical care.

A high school teacher, who wished to remain unnamed, said she was charged $15 by a doctor on March 16 when she requested for a sick sheet.

The allegations have raised serious questions about ethics in the health sector, with many worried that patients are being taken advantage of during times of illness.

Sick sheets are meant to be provided based on a patient’s health condition, and not as a service for profit.

In response, Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, confirmed that the practice was against the law.

“Ministry sick sheets are not sold or purchased,” he said.

He added that any reports of such behaviour will be investigated, and action will be taken once proper processes are followed.

Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Penioni Ravunawa, also condemned the issue and is urging the public to come forward.

“If they know anyone within the Ministry selling sick sheets, please make a formal complaint and we will take necessary action,” Mr Ravunawa said.

When asked about a warning to doctors, Mr Ravunawa said medical professionals are already aware that charging for sick sheets is wrong.

However, authorities are now calling on the public to report similar cases, as investigations into the allegations continue.
