This Easter weekend will forever be etched in the memories of the members of the Goundar family of Solovi, Nadi.

For couple Myhendra and Mohini Goundar, this weekend will have a double celebration - Easter and the joyous occasion of their only son Kartik Krishal Goundar, 21, who graduated last Friday from the University of the South Pacific with a Bachelor of Commerce.

Tears of joy were shared by the parents together with his grandmother Sharda Goundar knowing that years of sacrifice, hard work and perseverance in giving their son better education had been fulfilled.

Mother Mohini is the operations and finance manager of one of the biggest companies in Lautoka - IEW.

She was the most elated during the graduation ceremony knowing that the years of sacrifice in juggling her roles as a mother, wife and office manager had paid off.

“We were very proud. We were emotional knowing that the difficulties we endured over the years had been paid off,” Ms Goundar said.

“We could not stop our tears watching our son walk to the stage to receive his degree.

“We shed tears of joy knowing that the investment we planned and worked hard to achieve, despite the COVID pandemic, had come to fruition.

“We thank everyone who helped us. Our family members and especially the directors of Islands Electric and our company staff. Kartik is like a son to all the staff members and his success had made everyone happy.”

The Goundars are the descendants of the late Chin Sami Goundar (great grandfather), Tada Goundar and Sharda Goundar of Nadrala, Sigatoka. They now live in Nadi to give Kartik a better education.
