Doyal Sonia Singh is excited she can apply for National Toppers Scheme scholarship to pursue studies for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
She scored 377 marks out of 400 in the Year 13 Certificate Examination to top all students in the Northern Division.
On Thursday night, the 18-year-old was so excited as she dressed up in her school uniform and took a photo with her parents, Dharmendra Singh and Reshmi Singh.

This was during the announcement of the Revised 2021-2022 National Budget by the Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at around 11pm.
“Although according to the provincial results, I scored the highest in the North, I couldn’t pursue MBBS due to financial constraints so I decided to pursue a software engineering course at the University of the South Pacific,” the Valebasoga, Labasa, lass said.
“Now I am so happy and thank the Government for giving 20 students an opportunity to pursue their dream to become a doctor.”
She also thanked the Government for giving more scholarships which shows their commitment towards education.
The second eldest of three siblings’ marks were Mathematics - 99, English - 90, Biology - 93, Chemistry - 95 and Physics - 92.
She thanked her principal, primary and secondary school teachers who always made themselves available to help her in school work.
“With the numerous support I was getting during the coronavirus pandemic while staying at home, it made me feel relaxed,” she said.
“It was totally a new experience for some of us being away from teachers, classrooms and classmates and doing home schooling.
“I am forever grateful to my parents who always allowed me to be myself.”
