If you suspect that an elderly person is at risk from a neglectful or overwhelmed caregiver, or being preyed upon financially, it’s important to speak up.

This is Salote Drauna’s advocacy message during the weeklong Digicel Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival at Subrail Park in Labasa.

Sponsored by Maatuk Motors Spares Pte Limited, the 20-year-old is among eight queen contestants and has been given the arduous responsibility of representing her hometown as Miss Labasa.

Elder Abuse

“Elder abuse is happening all over our country including the Northern Division and we all need to work together to stop it,” said Ms Drauna.

A native of Wasavulu Village in Labasa she shares maternal links to Lau and is the second eldest of seven siblings.

“Everyone deserves to live in safety, with dignity and respect,” she said.

The Year 13 student of Labasa Sangam College said elder abuse includes physical, emotional, or sexual harm inflicted upon an older adult, their financial exploitation, or neglect of their welfare by people who are directly responsible for their care.

Inspiration

“I am inspired by my father, Penaia Bale, a former Labasa and Savusavu soccer rep, to raise awareness on elder abuse,” she said.

“This is why I joined this carnival to use the platform to promote the message.”

Aspiring to become an air hostess, Ms Drauna said she would also do her best to capture the Queen’s crown.
