Members of Savurogoyawa Women’s Club shed tears of joy when they received cooking material assistance from Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama.
Club president, Seruwaia Kristina, while thanking Mr Bainimarama before the gathering at Dreketi, Macuata on Thursday night said this was their first receipt of assistance from the Government.
“When we saw the items on display, we all cried because we got more than what we had asked for,” Ms Kristina said.

“We had only filled a simple form at the Seaqaqa District Office last year requesting some dishes, cups, pots and other small kitchen utensils.”
She said the club was based at Vunisea Village in Dreketi and was formed in 1998.
Since then, 24 unemployed mothers from the village have been gathering weekly to weave mats and do backyard gardening to earn some income.
“From the savings, we gradually bought some kitchen utensils to use during catering in the village whenever there were special functions,” she said.
“However, we didn’t have enough so we had to borrow from our neighbours.”
She said they were ashamed to continue borrowing over the years until they were advised to apply.
“This is a gift to us,” she said.
“It will surely be used for the benefit of the whole village.”
Mr Bainimarama was emotional also when Ms Kristina gave her vote of thanks.
He said to the club members that the Government was there for the women of Fiji.
