Dreketi Women Shed Tears Of Joy After Receiving Cooking Material

Members of Savurogoyawa Women’s Club shed tears of joy when they received cooking material assistance from Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainima­rama.

Club president, Seruwaia Kristi­na, while thanking Mr Bainimara­ma before the gathering at Dreketi, Macuata on Thursday night said this was their first receipt of assis­tance from the Government.

“When we saw the items on dis­play, we all cried because we got more than what we had asked for,” Ms Kristina said.

“We had only filled a simple form at the Seaqaqa District Office last year requesting some dishes, cups, pots and other small kitchen uten­sils.”

She said the club was based at Vunisea Village in Dreketi and was formed in 1998.

Since then, 24 unemployed moth­ers from the village have been gath­ering weekly to weave mats and do backyard gardening to earn some income.

“From the savings, we gradually bought some kitchen utensils to use during catering in the village whenever there were special func­tions,” she said.

“However, we didn’t have enough so we had to borrow from our neighbours.”

She said they were ashamed to continue borrowing over the years until they were advised to apply.

“This is a gift to us,” she said.

“It will surely be used for the ben­efit of the whole village.”

Mr Bainimarama was emotional also when Ms Kristina gave her vote of thanks.

He said to the club members that the Government was there for the women of Fiji.
