Driver in fatal accident granted bail

It is alleged Manifolau tried to overtake another vehicle near Drasa Avenue when he crashed into an oncoming vehicle.

The driver accused of causing the death of Ilami Kurucava, 22, in an accident in Lautoka on March 10, was granted bail yesterday.

Raphael Lesi Manifolau appeared in the Lautoka Magistrate’s Court charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving.

The late Mr Kurucava was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Manifolau, who was heading towards the Aspen Medical-managed Lautoka Hospital.

It is alleged Manifolau tried to overtake another vehicle near Drasa Avenue when he crashed into an oncoming vehicle.

Magistrate Qalinauci granted bail on the condition that Manifolau produced two sureties to pay a bail bond of $200 each, for him not to re-offend, not to change his address, adhere to a curfew of 6pm to 6am daily, and surrender all his travel documents and driver’s licence.

The case was adjourned to May 6 for a plea.
