Taxi driver Asish Chand Pratap, who allegedly stabbed his passenger in Labasa, was granted bail by the Labasa Magistrate’s Court, on December 7, 2023.

A taxi driver, who allegedly stabbed his passenger in Labasa, was granted bail by the Labasa Magistrates Court, yesterday.

Asish Chand Pratap is charged with one count of act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, a count of serious assault and one count of personation.

The alleged offence occurred on November 20, at Bulileka in Labasa after an argument ignited after the final taxi fare was not settled.

Pratap is alleged to have demanded a certain fare when they reached the Vaturekuka round-about and this led to him threatening and later causing injuries to the female passenger.

Defence lawyer, Amrit Sen, presented one surety for bail.

The surety who took responsibility is the accused’s elder brother, who is also a taxi driver and had no pending convictions in court.

Mr Sen informed the court that his client would abide by the court directives and would surrender his passport.

Police prosecutor, Constable, Vishal Sharma, did not object to bail.

However, he asked the court to transfer the matter to the High Court because of the seriousness of the offence.

Magistrate Safaira Ratu refused this request and said the matter would be transferred in the next sitting.

She adjourned the matter for mention on January 22, 2024.
