A fatal road accident that killed a one-year-old child along the Labasa-Nabouwalu Highway on April 11 has taken a shocking twist, with claims that drugs were hidden in the toddler’s diaper.

The claim reportedly arose from medical staff at the Seaqaqa Health Centre, who attended to the child on the night of the incident.

Police have since confirmed that the case is now under a three-pronged investigation— focusing on a traffic accident, suspected negligence, and potential drug-related offences.

Police confirmed that the suspect in the fatal accident died at the scene, while two others - one of whom was the child’s father - sustained serious injuries.

The child’s father later succumbed to his injuries, while the other person has since been discharged from hospital.

Police confirmed yesterday that, at this stage of the investigation, it could not be established how the illicit drugs was found on the child or which adult was in possession of them at the time of the accident.

According to police, investigations also cannot rule out the possibility that the drugs were intentionally concealed on the child to avoid detection following the accident.

The child, Vilimone Savua, his father, Tukai Catarogo, and their relative who was the driver, Ratu

Sakiusa Tumua, were laid to rest last Saturday at Naduri Village in Macuata.
