A drug raid conducted by the Fiji Police Force on board an inter-island passenger vessel arriving from the maritime islands on Saturday confiscated a handful bags containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operation, Livai Driu said seven clear zip lock plastic, 44 zip lock plastic and 572 branches of dried leaves were found wrapped in a black sulu.

“The parcel was unclaimed. Our search on shipping vessels will continue in our efforts on eradicating drugs,” said ACP Driu.

They arrested a 31-year-old unemployed man of Kinoya, who was found in possession of a blue bag containing four parcels of dried leaves wrapped in clear plastic on the same day.

ACPO Driu said the team had started to uproot plants in Maritime islands as information continue to come in.

“During the week, drugs were uprooted in Lau, Levuka, Gau, and Taveuni,” he said.

“We are glad that our stakeholders are providing us with information; that has led to drugs being confiscated and suspected persons arrested.”
