Adi Ateca Salanieta Ramasima was surprised to be receive the dux prize for Mabula District School of Cicia Island in Lau.

A long way from her origins in Lomanikoro in Bua, and maternal links to the Banabans on Rabi, the 13-year old accompanied her cousin, a school teacher in Cicia High School two years ago.

“I never expected to be awarded the dux prize because I just joined the school two years ago,” Adi Ateca said.

Her guardian, Luse Vulavou said Adi Ateca had the potential to do better. Ms Vulavou challenged her to score more than 500 out of six subjects. If she achieved this she would go to Lautoka, a part of Fiji that Adi Ateca has never travelled.

“It came as a shock to her when she scored the highest in all the subjects and a total of 551/600,” Ms Vulavou said.

The aspiring doctor dedicated her achievement to her parents and families in Bua.

She especially dedicated it to Ms Vulavou and her family for taking care of her while her cousin was on the mainland.

Adi Ateca will return to Vanua Levu where she will be begin her secondary school at Naikavaki College in Bua.
