A 33-year-old unemployed man who bit off his de facto partner’s ear, has been handed a four year jail sentence.

The offender has been convicted for a charge of causing grievous harm and of resisting arrest.

On January 5, 2020, the offender, following an argument of accusing his de facto partner of having an affair, hit the victim with a timber plank until it broke and bit off her ear lobe.

The court heard that the offender had 17 previous convictions of summary offences, however, not of violent offences.

Judge Justice Daniel Goundar, while sentencing the offender, said the offender inflicted significant bodily injuries to the victim.

He said the victim was hospitalised for two weeks and underwent multiple surgeries.

He also said the victim’s left ear lobe was missing and was using scarves to cover her injuries and scars.

The offender has been jailed for four years, however, Justice Goundar noted that he had already served two years and two months in remand custody.

The remaining period of the offender to serve is one year and 10 months.

Given this, Justice Goundar has declined to fix a non-parole period.
