Eid Celebration Muslims Mark End Of Ramadan

Muslims throughout the country celebrated Eid (Eid-ul-Fitr) yesterday to mark the end of the Ramadan Holy month of prayer and fasting after two years.

But this year was different for some.

Many attended the congregational Eid prayer service held in the morning, wore new clothes, shared samai (sweets) among themselves and with those who passed by; gave monetary donations to the poor who waited outside the mosques and invited friends to celebrate with them.

Toorak Jame Masjid (Mosque) assistant Imam (priest) Mohammed Imraan said the month of Ramadan was about sacrifice.

“We see that many people are poor and don’t have food; Ramadan is about patience and thinking about the welfare of others,” he said.

“Fasting taught us how others without food might feel.

“We are happy that we will celebrate Eid together after two years without any COVID-19 restrictions.”

The 25-year-old encouraged youths to help those in need.

Anwar Sikandar was busy sharing samai to the people who passed by in their vehicles. For him, the significance of Eid was to live for each other.

“Living for each other is humanity. People should also live the rest of the 11 months like the month of Ramadan, but we tend to forget,” he said.

Asep Setiawan, who came to celebrate Eid with his workmates at Toorak Jame Masjid, said he was hoping to visit his family in Indonesia this year.

He has been longing to celebrate Eid with his family for the past four years.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama also gave his message on Eid and said Fiji was a stronger country for being a nation of many faiths.
