Electrical faults top cause of house fires, NFA warns

A total of 186 property fires were reported last year in which houses sustained more than 90 per cent damage.
This was revealed by the National Fire Authority (NFA), warning home owners to practice fire safety.
NFA Acting Chief Executive Officer Joel Israel also revealed that electrical faults topped the list of causes of fires, followed by incendiary-caused fires and arson or suspicious fires.

"Never leave cooking unattended and keep flammable items away from heat sources, check electrical wiring regularly and avoid overloading power points,” Mr Israel said.
“Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children and have an emergency plan and ensure everyone in your household knows what to do in case of fire"
Mr Israel says with ongoing festivities connected to New Year celebrations and the new school year set to start in a few weeks, members of the public were urged to practice fire safety at home.
