A routine electrical upgrade at Navua Hospital has uncovered serious structural and compliance failures, prompting urgent government attention over the safety of the facility used daily by thousands across Serua, Namosi, and Rewa.

Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa confirmed that what began as a standard electrical project has now become a wider infrastructure review, after Public Works Department (PWD) teams discovered major building code violations.

“What started as a small issue grew bigger as we discovered problems with the workmanship carried out during the hospital’s initial construction,” Mr Ravunawa said.

“There are numerous issues related to the building code and structural integrity that simply cannot be ignored.”

The hospital is a critical lifeline for residents in the Central Division, making the safety of its infrastructure a top priority.

Mr Ravunawa stressed the Government's resolve to tackle the issue head-on.

“For the safety of patients and our staff, it’s important we do it right by putting in all the necessary resources. We owe that to the people of this region,” he said.

Despite the ongoing upgrade works, all essential services at the hospital remain open, with modifications made to maintain uninterrupted care.

“Outpatient services, the Special Out-patient Department (SOPD) clinic, maternal and child health clinic are all running as usual,” he added.

“Any disruption would be immediately addressed with our Sub-Divisional Medical Officer.”

PWD teams are reportedly working in isolated areas of the facility to allow clinical operations to continue safely.
