Elena Badau, 19, didn’t give up easily on her dreams of becoming a computer teacher.
The former Jasper Williams High School student began her studies at the University of the South Pacific (USP) at the Lautoka Campus with a Certificate in Information Technology.
During the semester break at the end of last year, she found a job at the Aamira Restaurant at the South Seas Club in Lautoka.

She knew there was no one else she could rely on for her studies this year, so she made up her mind to work and support herself.
“During the holidays, I made up my mind to get employment to earn some money, then to return to studies this semester,” she said.
“There is a need to sacrifice, and that is the way to be successful. God helps those who help themselves.”
Aamira Restaurant owner Hafiz Rahiman said Ms Nadau had a bright future and worked to support herself, showing women empowerment.
“She possesses good qualities such as honesty, discipline, and responsibility,” Mr Rahiman said.
“We are also an equal opportunity employer, giving the entire needed platform to earn and also learn new skills in customer service and cookery.”
Meanwhile, a former Saint Thomas High School Year 13 student, Melissa Grant, has pledged to take a gap year. Being brought up by a single parent, Melissa hopes to take a break this year and work to support her studies for next year at USP.
“I will take a break this year, work and save, and then enter university next year,” the 20-year-old Savusavu native said.
