As the world marks International Women’s Day, the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises and Development (FRIEND) is shining a spotlight on women driving social and economic transformation.

Women are leading change and building healthier families and stronger communities across Fiji.

FRIEND associate director, Melaia Salacakau, said this year's theme, “Give to Gain”, reflects the organisation’s commitment to empowering women through healthy living and income generation.

“We’ve been raising awareness about the types of food we eat, planting your own food growing their own food, and turning produce into value-added products,” she said.

“When women earn, families gain.”

Founded by the Minister for Women and Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, FRIEND is proudly women-led, with about 25 female staff.

Ms Salacakau said the organisation is women-led.

“Women are out in communities doing awareness work. We encourage each other in leadership, business, and even in the physical work our programmes require.”

Over the past 25 years, the NGO has focused on poverty alleviation through social health, economic empowerment, and disaster resilience.

Board Chairman Vinesh Kumar said the organisation empowers communities to take ownership of their development.

“Instead of over-relying on government, we empower people to drive their own progress,” Mr Kumar said.

“Women, especially in rural and deprived areas, are stepping out of their comfort zones and leading.”

With seasonal produce processed and marketed through FRIEND’s production line, women are entering the value chain despite financial and marketing challenges.

As Fiji reflects on women’s achievements, FRIEND’s message is clear: empowered women build resilient families and a stronger nation.
