Engineering has long been a male-dominated field.

But the International Day of Women in Engineering serves as a beacon of light, illuminating the invaluable contributions of women in this dynamic and innovative industry.

With the theme “Enhanced by Engineering,” this day celebrates the intersection of women’s talent, creativity and expertise with the transformative power of engineering.

Engineers Fiji has recognised the vital role that women play in shaping the future, driving progress, and revolutionising the nation through their ingenuity and dedication.

Engineers Fiji newly appointed president, Terence Erasito said engineering is not merely a profession.

Mr Erasito said engineering is a catalyst for change, a force that propels societies forward and enhances the quality of life for all.

Women in Engineering shines a spotlight on the resilience and unwavering commitment of females making a difference in the male-dominated field.

Challenges

He said engineering is generally a challenging field/profession and we are in the era where times are dramatically changing.

“Key challenges faced by women in the engineering industry involve: gender bias, limited advancement opportunities, difficulties in balancing work and personal life,” he said.

“It would be ideal that we all endeavour to refrain from the concept that engineering is a “male dominated field/profession” – Engineering is not gender biased.

Women representation

“Engineers Fiji does not differentiate between genders and we have not sought special recognition or made special requests to the Government to promote gender equality amongst its membership.

“Engineers Fiji continues to encourage local female engineers to work towards becoming active/practicing professional members for the nation’s established Institute (e.g. Engineers Fiji) so that they may voice (particularly from a female’s perspective) concerns and participate in decisions within the engineering industry.

“Their work not only enhances the way we live, work, and interact but also inspires future generations to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math fields and follow their passion for innovation.”

Given that there are no female Chartered Professional Engineers who have been appointed to the Council of Engineers Fiji, he said it would be prudent to include female engineers (i.e. those from different membership Classes) as appointed members to the Council.

This will be a key topic to discuss at their first Council Meeting in the forthcoming weeks.
