Eresi Lebatabua etched a piece of history when he became the first iTaukei pupil to be named the Suva Muslim College Students Council

president on Thursday.

With more than 200 votes Eresi was surprised when he was nominated by students to lead the council.

Eresi said it was educational when the election process was taken into schools because it gave a sense of responsibility of on the right to vote.

“It took me two weeks to campaign and show my leadership qualities to my peers, which was a bit challenging,” Eresi said.

“Through the support of my colleagues and teachers, I managed to attain most votes.”

The Nukubalavu, Savusavu native aspires to become lawyer while he harbours a dream to be part of the Fiji Youth Parliament one day.

He said the electoral process to pick student leaders gave every child the equal right to vote.

“I don’t consider being ahead of others in terms of leadership, but I’m willing to serve every student in times of need,” he said.

“One of the main priorities I would like for us a school to focus on is to care for mental health within the school compound.”

Eresi said most students have all sorts of issues from home, but these could be resolved through mentorship programmes being implemented in school.

“It will create a safer space for students to express themselves,” he said.
