A flash flood alert is in force for all low lying and flash flood prone areas of Viti Levu, the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet) has warned.

In an update last night, FijiMet reported that a low-pressure trough is located just south of the islands. This is causing cloudy conditions across much of the country.

Meanwhile, another low-pressure trough is moving in, bringing more clouds and rain, which is expected to affect the islands starting today.

The weather office has warned of localised flooding of roads, iris crossings and low water bridges.

The National Disaster management Office (NDMO) has also advised villages and communities in Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Moala and Southern Lau Group, to be on high aleart and continue to strictly adhere to advisories issued by authorities for safety.

“With flash flooding expected in low-lying and flood-prone areas as a result of the forecasted heavy rain. The general public is strongly advised to stay away and refrain from attempting to cross or swim in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads and walkways where water is above knee level,” the NDMO said.

A strong wind warning is now also in force for land areas of Kadavu and nearby smaller islands Yasawa and Mamanuca waters, southwest Viti Levu and Kadavu passage.
