Fiji Meteorological Services Forecaster Steven Meke says the Fiji group will be experiencing strong winds from today until next week.

“Currently we have a strong wind warning out for the whole of Fiji waters and some land areas as well. The strong winds are being generated by the high pressure systems to the far south and is directed over the Fiji waters,” he said

“We expect the strong south easterly winds to be around for a while, early next week as well.”

He said the strong wind warnings were specifically for Kadavu, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, the eastern, southern and northern parts of Viti Levu specifically from the Coral Coast, Suva, Nausori and further to Rakiraki.

So all those areas are under strong wind warning as well as the southern parts of Viti Levu taking it from Nabouwalu to Savusavu up to Udu Point including the eastern parts of Taveuni, Cikobia and the nearby smaller islands,” he said.

“The winds are strong enough to cause the seas to be very rough so it won’t be advisable to mariners to be traveling in these seas.”

Due to the heavy rain events in the past few weeks, soil in the ground is still moist and loose, this poses the risk of flash flood and landslides. Communities living in flood and landslide prone areas need to remain vigilant and proactive.

Motorists are also advised of decreased visibility in areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
