Even the rain couldn’t wash away the joy as three generations of a Newtown family came together to celebrate Mother’s Day at My Suva Park on Monday.

Grandparents, parents and children shared a day filled with music, friendly volleyball matches, and the mouth-watering aroma of a family BBQ.

The heartfelt celebration, organised by younger members of the family, was a touching tribute to the women who raised them.

Proud grandmother Mary Dreqaso, 71, was surrounded by her children and grandchildren, and beamed with happiness.

“It’s a nice mother’s day because all my grandchildren, my children—they are all together here celebrating with us,” she said.

“We feel very happy and special that they did something for us for mother’s day.”

For Vasemaca Veiqaravi, 73, another beloved grandmother, the family’s thoughtful gesture was everything.

“Because it’s a holiday, my children said, we all go to the park to celebrate mother’s day,’” she said.

“Every year, our family prepares something meaningful for the mothers and this year, a picnic at the park was their choice of celebration.”

Even the gentle drizzle couldn’t dampen their spirits.

Debra Arieta Pita, 15, one of the granddaughters, explained what the day meant to them.

“Celebrating mother’s day for us is very important, because they struggle so much for us,” she said. “We’re also making food for them, because they always cook for us. It’s nice to give back to them.”
