A Ba family escaped injury after a truck crashed into the front porch of their home at Tuvu Flats yesterday morning while they were away.

Nayamode Qaqaimeke, caretaker of the Jerusalem Fellowship Church, said it was fortunate no one was home when the incident happened.

Mr Qaqaimeke, a vendor at the Lautoka Market, lives in the house behind the church with his wife and daughter.

He and his wife had gone to the market while their daughter was at school when the truck veered off the road and crashed through the church fence before slamming into the right side of the house’s front porch.

“We thank God that no one was at home when the incident happened,” Mr Qaqaimeke said.

“When we are at home, we usually sit on the porch, which is where the truck crashed.

“If we had been sitting there at the time, it could have been a different story. We might have been seriously injured or even killed.”

Mr Qaqaimeke said they were told the driver had been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A witness, Jitendra Naidu, said the truck left the road before crashing through the church fence and into the house.

Mr Naidu said several boys nearby rushed to the scene and helped remove the driver, who was believed to have suffered serious injuries, before he was taken to hospital.

He alleged the truck was travelling at high speed and the driver may have lost control of the vehicle.

Police have been contacted and investigations into the incident are continuing.
