A family of 12 escaped unharmed after a six-bedroom home was destroyed in a fast-moving fire at Laucala Beach on Monday night.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) responded to the blaze at Salumi Settlement, opposite the Coca-Cola area, after receiving a distress call through the 910 emergency line at 9:39pm.

Fire crews from Valelevu, Nakasi and Suva were dispatched, highlighting a coordinated multi-station response.

The first appliance from Valelevu Fire Station arrived at 9:45pm to find the corrugated iron structure fully engulfed in flames.

The intensity of the fire, combined with highly combustible building materials, caused it to spread rapidly through the property.

Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to contain the blaze and stop it from spreading to nearby homes. Crews from Nakasi and Suva reinforced efforts, ensuring water supply and maintaining safety at the scene.

Despite the advanced stage of the fire, crews brought the situation under control and fully extinguished the blaze by about 10:45pm.

The house, owned by Mr Deve Pita Dakuliga, was occupied at the time, but all occupants were accounted for. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

An investigation will determine the cause of the fire, while NFA investigators assess damage and contributing risk factors.

Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane commended firefighters and urged the public to remain alert.

“I commend our officers for their swift, coordinated, and professional response in bringing this fire under control and preventing further damage to surrounding properties. Their actions once again demonstrate the dedication and readiness of our firefighters to protect lives and property,” he said.

“This incident is a strong reminder of how quickly fires can escalate, particularly in residential areas where building materials can accelerate fire spread. We urge all members of the public to remain vigilant, ensure electrical safety, and practice basic fire prevention measures within their homes and communities.”

The NFA emphasised the importance of early reporting, saying timely emergency calls are critical in minimising damage and saving lives.

Members of the public are urged to report fires or emergencies immediately by calling 910.
