A family of seven are currently seeking assistance after their home was destroyed in a fire last Friday at Belego Settlement, Savusavu.

Home owner, Naren Chand, 59, said at the time of the incident his daughters, son-in-law and grandchildren were at home.

“I was away in Dreketi managing our business when I received the sad news around 7.30pm,” Mr Chand said.

“We don’t know the cause of fire yet, however my children are saying there was some kind of electrical wiring fault in the ceiling that had sparked that started the fire,” he said.

“The fire later spread through the walls.”

He said recently his daughter built a flat to stay with her husband and two children closer to them.

Mr Chand said it took him more than 20 years to build the house, storeroom and car park area.

“My wife and I worked very hard to buy everything for the home. We started from scratch,” he said.

“We need all the support to rebuild our house and my grandchildren need help to go to school since we’ve lost everything.”

His grandchildren are attending Savusavu Secondary School and Khemendra Central School.

He estimated the cost of damage to be around $400,000.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said Police investigations have started. There was no causality.

This is the second property to catch fire this month in the Northern Division. The first house fire was at Qelewaqa, Labasa on September 14.
