A family from Vunicagi in Dreketi, Macuata, is seeking justice for their son.

Tamlesh Prasad’s only child, Krisnav Krisav Prasad, tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run accident in Vunicagi on Tuesday afternoon.

Krisnav was seven years old and a student at Dreketi Primary School.

A van driver has been accused of the crime.

Mr Prasad described his son’s death as “heartbreaking,” a loss that will forever haunt their memories.

He shared that he first learned of the tragedy from his family while he was at work.

The grieving father said he saw his son’s lifeless body on Tuesday at 4pm.

“I quickly took time off to see my son,” he said.

According to Mr Prasad, his son died at the scene.

The post-mortem report, received yesterday, revealed injuries from the accident that led to his death.

“I hope the post-mortem report will help catch the accused driver,” he said.

The grieving father said that losing his only son has made things incredibly difficult for the family.

“We cannot sleep and we still think it’s a dream,” Mr Prasad said.

He called on the Police to conduct a thorough investigation and hold the accused driver accountable.

The timeframe for the funeral rituals has not been confirmed yet.

According to Police statement, the victim was reportedly crossing the Dreketi Highway near the Basikalave Settlement when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a man in his 50s.

The driver will soon be questioned as investigators await the post-mortem examination results.

LTA reminder

Land Transport Authority chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa yesterday called for heightened vigilance on roads following the tragic accident.

Mr Rokosawa said the tragic event reinforced the need for all road users to exercise extreme caution, particularly around school zones.

“This unfortunate incident reinforces the need for all road users to exercise extreme caution at all times,” Mr Rokosawa said.

“Speeding kills and drivers must be extra vigilant, especially around school pick-up and drop-off points,” he said.

He expressed condolences to the grieving family and stressed that while the authority had conducted numerous awareness campaigns in schools, young children required constant supervision.

“Drivers must reduce speed, especially around school zones and high-risk areas, pedestrians must exercise caution, and caregivers must educate and supervise children about road safety,” he said.

The CEO warned that enforcement measures would be intensified, with drivers who continuously break traffic laws facing showcause proceedings and other penalties.

“February recorded zero fatalities, and it is devastating to now record one in March, particularly the loss of such a young life,” Mr Rokosawa said.

The current road death toll stands at three compared to 15 for the same period last year.
