Alvin Kumar is focused on doing well in Year 12 this year.

The Korovuto College student was one of thousands around the country who began the 2022 academic year yesterday.

“I am so excited to be in my new form,” he said.

The 17-year-old said the struggles his family endured had inspired him to work hard to achieve his goal to become an accountant.

“Coming from a farming background I’ve known the struggles we went through,” he said.

“All those challenges pushed me to work hard and achieve my goals.”

His father, Sanjay Kumar said for 11 years, he had been supporting his only son with the income earned from his sugar cane farm.

Last Saturday the 42-year-old farmer took his son out to Nadi Town and bought him new uniforms and school stationery.

He said a better education for his only son was a priority.

“Being a farmer is a struggle. The sugar cane field does not only belong to me; I shared it with other family members,” he said.

“I did not give up on the little income I received from this farm. My first priority is to support my son’s education.

“I always encouraged him to study hard and have a better life than me,” Mr Kumar added.
