I will miss my husband and son. These were the words uttered by Sanjeshni Sharma, 35, as she held a photograph of her husband and son who were swept away while crossing the Tabarua River in Nasau, Nadi on Saturday night.

Dead are Anit Sharma, 38, a carpenter/contractor and 12-year-old Avneet, a Year 6 student of Votualevu Public School.

The late father and son were returning from a prayer event that night when they encountered the heavy rain and flash flooding.

Mrs Sharma said the two left home at 11am and were expected to return at 7pm, but unfortunately they never reached home that night.

“I am still in shock,” Mrs Sharma said.

She said that day her husband had a toothache but had decided to attend a prayer event.

“He was more into religion, so he went with our son,” she said.

“My husband was a good man and had done well by serving his community when he was needed.”

“We were married in 2005, and he was more of a family man. My son was very close to his father, and he would go accompany him most of the time,” she said.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the two were trying to cross the river to get to their home despite being warned not to, due to the strong current.

She added a search party was organised but their body was found at 6am on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the family said that talks for the funeral are underway but will be confirmed after the post-mortem.
