For Unaisi Lutumailagi, Thursday’s graduation from the University of the South Pacific was more than a personal milestone.

She said her journey was far from easy.
“Being a private student was not easy. There were times I felt I couldn’t continue, but my father’s sacrifices kept me going.”
Her father worked long hours, splitting his time between maintenance at Nausori Primary School during the day and welding for another company every evening.
Despite the fatigue, he ensured her school fees were paid, her bus fares and allowances were provided.
“My father never complained. He quietly worked so I could pursue my dreams. Every certificate, every achievement I have, belongs to him as much as it does to me,” Ms Lutumailagi said, holding back tears.
She reflected on the long nights and early mornings spent studying, often thinking of her father’s hard work.
“I remember the times I wanted to give up, but I thought of him and how much he sacrificed. That pushed me to keep going,” she said.
Ms Lutumailagi hopes her journey inspires other students who face challenges.
“Hard work and determination can pay off, but having someone who believes in you, like my father did, makes all the difference.
‘’I didn’t just graduate for myself, I graduate for him too,” she said, smiling.
