Timoci Vunisa was lost for words when he received the tragic news of his 33-year- old son, Stanley Naisevu Vunisa’s, death between 3am to 4 am on Thursday at Namuaimada Village in Ra.

“I have four children, there are three girls and he was the only boy and the second eldest,” Mr Vunisa said.

“The security guard for one of the shops came to tell me what had happened, he was drunk and had laid down just a short distance after the store, when the bus ran over him."

“When I arrived a white sheet covered his body and they were waiting for the Police vehicle to come from Suva.”

He alleged the bus driver parked the vehicle after the tragic incident, but he was not aware of where the driver had gone.

“The back of his head was crushed,” he said.

He said he resided with his wife at Namuaimada Village in Ra, however his son was a farmer and stayed with his three children and wife at a different settlement.

“I saw him last at around lunch-time yesterday (Wednesday) when we were having lunch together here at home,” he said.

“I will miss him because he was our only son and he was the only one we knew would take care of us in our old age because all our daughters are married off and we are here alone.

“He was a person with a good heart, he hardly spoke and would always be on his own but he was a very useful person to have around during functions especially when it came to the traditional protocol.”

Funeral preparations had not been made yet.

“The matter is still being investigated, his body is at the Lautoka Hospital for the post-mortem examination,” he said.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident stating that the late Stanley Naisevu Vunisa was the latest road fatality and investigations were underway.

“The victim is alleged to have been lying on the side of the road when he was run over by a bus driven by a 45-year-old man. The alleged incident occurred after 3am (Thursday),” she said.
