The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) hosted a morning tea yesterday for members of the Chinese community to mark Chinese New Year in Labasa.

Northern regional manager Sheik Yusuf told those gathered at their Labasa Office that they respected them and wished to continue with the good relationship with the Chinese community.

“We decided to host them as we deal with them daily, conducting inspections and training since they run different kinds of businesses in Labasa Town,” Mr Yusuf said.

“We felt it is important we continue communicating well with them as they have been doing before.

“We told them that we are always here to assist.

“Language is a barrier, but through the help of their translator, we manage to keep communication going.

“They are well versed with regulation and rules of the commission.”

Liu Cai Yun, while translating the FCCC’s message to the community, said there were more than 15 Chinese men and women in Labasa doing business.

“Every year we celebrate one animal for the good things and this year it is Year of the Dog,” she said.

“The celebration began yesterday and will continue for a period of 15 days.

“If we were in China, even kids on streets come to our home to celebrate this day.

“This is the only organisation that invited us for celebration and we are very thankful to them,” Ms Yun said.

“I have been in Fiji for three years with my sister operating a clothing business.

“Yes we do miss home, but we feel happy to stay in Labasa.

“Today we will be visiting each other’s home to celebrate New Year.”
