The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has been grappling with an increasing influx of contraband items being smuggled into prison compounds.

Yesterday, a significant seizure was made during a routine sweep at the Naboro Prison, where officers confiscated a large black plastic bag containing a touch screen mo-bile phone, marijuana, mobile batteries, suki, and a white powdery substance believed to be drugs.

FCS officials have expressed concern over the rising tide of illegal activity, which they say undermines rehabilitation efforts aimed at offenders.

“While we remain committed to the humane treatment of offenders, the smuggling of drugs and other contraband is a serious issue that directly impacts our rehabilitation goals,” the FCS said in a statement.

In response to the growing problem, the FCS has been forced to review and tighten its security protocols.

One key area of concern has been the concealment of contraband within items brought in during prison visits.

Suspension of services

As a result, the service has decided to suspend the consumption of cooked food brought in by prisoners’ families and relatives during the upcoming festive season.

“We understand that food is an important part of family visitation, especially during the festive period,” the FCS added.

“However, we must take this precaution to ensure that nothing harmful is smuggled into the facility.”

The FCS has called on the public to cooperate in this effort to main-tain the safety and integrity of the prison system.

The suspension of cooked food is part of broader measures aimed at addressing the growing issue of drug smuggling and contraband infiltration.
