The Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation (FDPF) is urging the public to show empathy and patience towards elder persons at all times.

This advice follows a recent incident whereby an elderly man was a victim to an ATM card theft while trying to withdraw his pensions.

FDPF said in a media statement that the incident the vulnerability of elder persons in public spaces.

The organisation calls for the urgent need for greater empathy, awareness, and community responsibility.

"Elder persons - many of whom may also be living with disabilities, mobility challenges, or cognitive impairments - often rely on assistance from others to access essential services such as banking. This reliance should never be exploited," FDPF said.

"Instead, it calls for compassion, patience, and ethical behavior from all members of society.

"The actions of concerned members of the public who stopped to assist the elderly gentleman demonstrate the power of empathy and community solidarity."

FDPF strongly encourages more people to follow this example by safely checking in on elder persons who appear distressed or in need of support, and by alerting authorities or bank staff when concerns arise.

“This incident is a stark reminder that elder abuse is not always hidden - it can happen in broad daylight, in public places, and through acts of deception,” said FDPF.

“As a society, we must do more to protect our elders, uphold their dignity, and ensure they feel safe accessing essential services.”

FDPF also urges financial institutions, service providers, and relevant authorities to strengthen elder-friendly and disability-inclusive measures.

"Including accessible banking services, clear safeguards against exploitation, and increased public awareness on how to assist elder persons safely and respectfully.

"Respecting and protecting our elders is a shared responsibility. Empathy is not optional - it is essential to building a safe, inclusive, and caring society for all."
