A school in Macuata has sparked scrutiny after drugs were recently discovered in the possession of students.

Two female students were caught in possession of dried leaves believed to be marijuana.

School manager Ranadiniceve Raluna voiced the community’s concern and said they had taken action on the cases to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite concerns about potential damage to the school’s reputation, Ms Raluna acknowledged that illicit drugs had entered their school premises, prompting them to confront the issue head-on.

“As a manager, I can confirm illicit drugs is coming into my school, and it must stop now,” she said.

She claims of being informed of this after being tipped off by a student of that same class.

“Drug peddling is not only concentrated among the boys, but, now, female students as well,” she said.

Report

The drug find case was reported at the closest Police Post.

“When I asked the Police officers after a few days on the progress of the case, I was informed they still investigating.”

Dissatisfied with the slow investigation process, Ms Raluna approached the Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka to look into the matter.

Ms Raluna claim children were being targeted as peddlers due to lower suspicion by police.

Police investigates

SSP Baledrokadroka said their drug intelligence team was investigating the matter, following claims that two students were smoking dried marijuana leaves.

“We are aware of this report from the school manager, and we are following up on some leads to identify the supplier,” he said.

SSP Baledrokadroka added interviews had been conducted with the students to establish the circumstances leading to this illicit discovery.
