The Foundation for the Education of Needy Children (FENC) in Fiji has taken a proactive approach to support disadvantaged students ahead of the 2027 academic year.
More than 100 people, including children as young as six, took part in the 4.8-kilometre walk from Lions Park through the streets of Labasa Town to Labasa Sangam College before returning to the park.
According to FENC Northern divisional coordinator Sitamma Chinaiya the organisation had provided free books, school bags and stationery to 3500 children in Vanua Levu last year.

“Although there are still seven months before the start of the next school year, we have chosen to be proactive and raise as much money as possible so that children in the North who are in desperate need of assistance can access support from the organisation.”
Ms Chinaiya said it was the first time FENC had organised a walkathon in the Northern Division.
She thanked the organisation monitoring and evaluation officer, Maopa Marayawa for coming and the head office for helping in creating awareness, members of the disciplined forces, children, parents, business houses and stakeholders for their support and participation.
