The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) yesterday launched its YES Outreach programme in Suva, aimed at strengthening voter awareness and participation ahead of the Local Government and General Elections.

Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Usaia Ratuvili, the chief guest, said the initiative reinforces a fundamental democratic principle — that elections belong to the people.

“The YES Outreach is a timely reminder to the people of Fiji: this is your election, and your participation makes a difference,” Justice Ratuvili said.

He said public confidence in elections rests on three key elements: clarity, accessibility and trust.

“Voters must understand the process, be able to participate, and trust that the system is fair and credible. Initiatives such as the YES Outreach contribute directly to all three.”

Justice Ratuvili said while legal and institutional frameworks are essential, they are not sufficient on their own.

“The true strength of any electoral system lies in the participation of its people. A well-administered election must also be well understood, accessible, and inspire confidence.”

He added that the outreach reflects a shift from elections being seen as institution-driven to being people-owned.

As Fiji prepares for both the Local Government Elections and the General Election, he stressed the need for clear, consistent and accessible communication on timelines, eligibility and processes.

He also acknowledged the inclusion of overseas voter registration, describing it as an important step towards inclusivity.

Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa said the YES Outreach marks a “long-awaited journey” to connect directly with Fijians at home and abroad.

“It is a unified, people-centred approach that brings together nationwide voter registration, overseas voter registration, community engagement and voter awareness,” Ms Mataiciwa said.

She said the initiative aims to ensure every eligible voter is registered and that their details are up to date ahead of the elections.

“Our goal is to put the power back where it belongs — in the hands of the people.”

The nationwide voter registration and awareness exercise began yesterday and will run until June 13, 2026, targeting communities, schools, tertiary institutions, villages, settlements and workplaces.

Organisations are also encouraged to request voter registration services at their workplaces.
