The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) is in discussions with Corrections officers to access Corrections facilities to allow persons under detention or a term of imprisonment of less than twelve months to vote.
As the 2018 General Election nears, the Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, said just as in the 2014 General Election, persons in this category were also eligible to apply for postal voting once the date of the election was announced.
Mr Saneem said Section 3 (2) (a) of the Electoral (Registration of Voters) Act disallows persons from registering to vote if they are serving terms of imprisonment of twelve months or more – handed down by a Court in Fiji or any other country.
