Festive relief for households as Rewa Butter prices drop from tomorrow

FCCC approves reductions of up to 8.38% after lower landed costs of raw butter

In a timely boost for Fijian households ahead of the festive season, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has announced significant reductions in the retail prices for all sizes of Rewa Butter, effective tomorrow.

The price adjustment follows an average 8 per cent decrease in the landed cost of bulk raw butter compared to the previous assessment.

This downward trend marks a sharp reversal from earlier in the year when tight global supplies and drought conditions in New Zealand had driven prices to multi-year highs.

The retail price for a 125g pack of Rewa Butter will decrease from $3.91 to $3.58.

Additionally, the price for a 250g pack will drop from $7.77 to $7.12, while the 500g pack will see a reduction from $15.58 to $14.28.

These changes represent a price decrease of approximately 8.33 per cent to 8.38 per cent across the product range.

Global market shift

The FCCC said the local price drop was directly linked to a "decisive flip" in global dairy markets.

After peaking in May 2025, international butter prices have begun to collapse due to an abundant milk supply in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

"Strong demand earlier in the year, led by a surge in dairy imports from China and drought-reduced production in New Zealand, had pushed prices up," the FCCC statement read..

"However, the market is now flooded with supply, shifting the global trend into a clear downturn that is expected to continue into early 2026".

Because Rewa Butter is blended locally using imported raw materials, its price is heavily influenced by procurement costs, including freight and currency exchange rates.

The FCCC said that its vigilant monitoring of these market fluctuations is essential for "alleviating cost-of-living concerns".

The commission has committed to regular inspections to ensure that retailers comply with the new regulated prices.

"We regularly conduct inspections and monitoring, ensuring regulated prices for essential goods are being complied with."
