Fiji is stepping into a new era of data management as the Information Dissemination Division (IDD) of the Fiji Bureau of Statistics unveils a digital transformation plan designed to make national statistics faster, more secure, and more accessible to all Fijians.

Speaking during the World Statistics celebrations in Suva today, chief statistician for the IDD, Ambrose Smith, said the bureau’s digital upgrades were reshaping how information was stored, shared, and protected.

“We’re no longer waiting for hackers to attack. We’re actively protecting our systems and improving access for staff and users,” Mr Smith said.

The bureau has already increased internet speed, introduced biometric attendance systems, and expanded virtual communication tools to improve operations across regional offices.

The IT team is linking offices in Nadi and Labasa to the central server and introducing secure data lake storage for efficient data management.

Plans are also underway to implement single sign-on systems, IT help-desk tracking software, and regular cybersecurity vulnerability checks.

Meanwhile, the Publications Unit is revamping the FBoS website, reactivating its Facebook page, and introducing open-access data portals.

“We want the public to engage with our data, not just read it. Soon, publications will include infographics, animations, and translations in Hindi and iTaukei,” Mr Smith said.

The bureau is also exploring interactive data dashboards and plans to hold data literacy workshops for schools and NGOs.

“Our goal is to make statistics understandable and accessible for all,” he added.

Through these digital upgrades, FBoS aims to create a future where every statistic is secure, shared, and used to improve lives.
