Fiji Day celebration in Labasa to highlight unity

The national Fiji Day celebration, set for Thursday at Subrail Park in Labasa, is progressing as armed forces prepare by conducting mock drills.
The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Navy carried out the drills yesterday, involving over 100 officers from both divisions.
The RFMF fired customary celebration gunshots and sang the national anthem at the venue yesterday. Additionally, minor inspections of the floodlights were carried out, with personnel installing a few extra devices.

Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, said their security preparations for the upcoming celebration are on track.
Labasa Town Council special administrator Samuela Ligairi is optimistic about a grand spectacle for the upcoming event.
He added that Fiji flags will be erected at each corner of the Central Business District of Labasa starting today to signify 54 years of independence.
“We intend to go big, better than 2018 when we last hosted the national celebration in Labasa,” Mr Ligairi said.

Macuata Tourism Association president Paul Jaduram said the celebration presented an opportunity for Labasa to showcase its friendly hospitality and enhance its profile as a growing town.
Commissioner Northern, Uraia Rainima, encouraged everyone to be part of the one day celebration which will start off with a march from Y- Corner through the town at 6.30am.
Mr Ligairi said a national reconciliation programme will be part of the Fiji Day celebration, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere in attendance.
He emphasised that such celebrations play a significant role in promoting reconciliation efforts between the two major races, Indo-Fijians and iTaukei.
He urged northerners to not miss this opportunity and be part of the national celebration.
