Fiji ends UN mission in Iraq as troops return

After more than two decades in war-torn Iraq, Fiji's final contingent of 165 soldiers returned home, ending the nation's 21-year deployment under the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
Families, dignitaries, and national leaders gathered at Albert Park, Suva, to pay tribute to the soldiers' dedication, courage, and professionalism.
The ceremonial parade was a celebration of service, resilience, and sacrifice.

Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, who initiated Fiji's deployment to Iraq, described the return as "one of the great days" and expressed gratitude to all Fijians who served in Iraq and the wider Middle East.
President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu honoured the 11 soldiers who lost their lives during the mission, including Ratu Apakuki Tokaduadua, Sekuri Sako, Jacob Faktaufon, Timoci Bola, Ratu Eliki Maibenau, Kolinio Mocevakaca, Tomasi Saumadu, and Jona Naqio.
He also praised the soldiers families, saying: "Thank you for your prayers and for holding the fort here at home. I know it is not easy to carry out both fatherly and motherly duties while the soldiers are away."
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka described the homecoming as a historic milestone, marking the conclusion of Fiji's continuous contribution to global peacekeeping under the United Nations mandate.
"For more than two decades, Fiji demonstrated discipline, reliability, and unwavering commitment to peacekeeping," the PM said.
Lieutenant Colonel Timoci Naivalu, Commanding Officer of the First Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment, acknowledged the Government and families for their support.
"It has been an honour for our soldiers to serve under the United Nations in Iraq," he said.
"The environment was challenging, and the work demanding, but our men and women showed resilience, professionalism, and unity throughout. We return knowing the mission is complete."
