Fiji has launched its first National Water Resources Management and Sanitation Policy, marking a major step towards improving access to safe drinking water, sanitation and protecting the country's freshwater resources for future generations.
Launched today alongside the Fiji Integrated Water Resources Management Plan and the National Rural Water Point Mapping Survey Report, the policy provides Fiji's first national framework for managing water resources and delivering water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services.
The policy is supported by a 10-year action plan aimed at strengthening water security and building resilience against climate change.

It seeks to address long-standing challenges in the sector by improving coordination between government agencies, development partners and communities, while promoting equitable access to safe drinking water and sanitation and ensuring the sustainable management of water resources.
Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva said the Government would work with all stakeholders to strengthen water security and improve the lives of all Fijians.
"The new policy and management plan will help improve public health, strengthen climate resilience and ensure every Fijian has access to safe water, better sanitation and a healthier environment," Mr Tuinaceva said.
The accompanying 10-year Integrated Water Resources Management Plan outlines practical measures, including groundwater permitting, surface water licensing, improved flood management, stronger water monitoring systems and better protection of water catchments.
Water and Sewerage director Mohammed Nistar Khan said the launch marked the beginning of a new phase for Fiji's water sector.
He said the department would now focus on implementing the policy by establishing a National Water Resource Management Coordination Committee and working closely with stakeholders to improve water security.
"We also aim to protect freshwater resources and enhance water and sanitation services across the country," he said.
