“You made sure our beloved country was protected. Eto you did your job to the best of your ability and never quit on us despite how tired and fatigued you were”.

These are the sentiments echoed by K9 Eto’s handler as members of the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, New Zealand Police, Australian Police

gathered at the Fiji Detector Dog Unit Complex in Nasese last week to farewell a fellow law enforcement officer who died following a short illness.

K9 Eto was brought over from the New Zealand Police Dog Academy in 2015 and was based at the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, a joint K9 operational team consisting of handlers from the Fiji Police Force and Fiji Revenue and Customs Service operating out of Nadi and Nasese.

K9 Eto had assisted with the detection of narcotics valued at millions of dollars and large sums of undeclared currencies.

The FDDU Program is a partnership with the Fiji Police, FRCS, New Zealand Police and New Zealand Customs Service, and sharing the loss was David Huff the NZ Chief Customs Officer Pacific Detector Dog Programme who said K9 officers have a huge impact on operations worldwide.

“All of us here in NZ from the Pacific Detector Dog Programme stand with you today. The sadness and tears for ETO in Fiji and NZ is testament to what a dog means to us all, to us we have lost one of our team.”

“ETO was named by the people of Fiji, having served and protected the people and the country of Fiji well by protecting the borders and keeping the community safe. We lay him now to rest and thank him for his service to Fiji”.

Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, Customs Officer Sakiusa Lasaqa spoke on behalf of K9 Eto’s handler who is away overseas.

“As a team we had immediate success on the road. These arrests and finds would not have been possible without you, you made me look like a superstar at times; truth be told you made me shine”.

“You made me the K9 handler that I am today, and never met a challenge that you didn’t rise to the occasion, you were a great partner and I am forever thankful for you”.
