Fiji has recorded its first COVID-19 related death.

Health and Medical Services Minister, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete announced this in a press conference the last hour.

A 66-year-old gentleman who returned to Fiji from India passed away at the Lautoka Hospital yesterday.

On July 4, 2020, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services personnel detected COVID-like symptoms on the 66-year-old man.

His son who travelled with him from India is also in isolation.

They travelled from India on board a flight with 107 passengers, these passengers remain securely in quarantine.

Fiji's first border quarantine case –– a 66-year-old man who contracted COVID-19 in India –– has sadly passed away.

Fijian communities still remain free of the virus, but that does not make this tragedy any easier to bear.

His family and friends have our deepest sympathies.
