The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has denied claims circulating on social media that a small wooden bridge at Koronubu in Ba collapsed after failing to support the weight of a sugarcane truck.

The incident, believed to have occurred yesterday, was widely shared online, prompting criticism from social media users who blamed the FRA for failing to replace ageing wooden bridges on access roads.

Concerns were also raised that the bridge continued to be used not only for transporting sugarcane, but also by schoolchildren, workers and elderly residents travelling to medical facilities, raising potential safety risks.

However, when contacted, the FRA said the bridge had not collapsed.

“The truck veered too close to the edge of the bridge, causing it to veer off and become stuck.

“An FRA team has been mobilised to inspect the site. It is a short bridge located along a loop road, and access is not cut off,” the authority said.
