New Zealand-based Fletcher Construction, has now been appointed to continue the works on the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge after its original bidder, China Railway 14th Group, fell through.

This was confirmed by Fiji Roads Authority’s chief executive officer Jonathan Moore yesterday.

Mr Moore said contractual issues arose that meant that they could not proceed with the original bidder.

Its contract was terminated and the second placed bidder in the original tender, Fletcher Construction, was given the project.

Mr Moore also highlighted the two contractors Dayals Quarries and Higgins Fiji were appointed to complete the Suva S3 contract after the original Contractor China Railways First Group failed to meet their contractual obligations and their contract was terminated.

The moves are indicative of comments from the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who said that contracts are based on merit and not from which country the bidder is from.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was responding to a New Zealand journalist after Fulton Hogan Hiways lost a recent contract to China Railway Fifth Group.

Meanwhile, FRA is working with Fulton Hogan Hiways on the extended Central and Northern Maintenance Contracts and a number of other sites around Fiji.
