Fiji is re-establishing its Embassy in Brussels after Cabinet endorsed a phased reopening, marking a renewed diplomatic push into Europe.
The Embassy, first opened in 1973, played a central role in Fiji’s relations with the European Union (EU) and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). It was closed in 2021 as part of post-COVID austerity measures, but Government says Fiji’s growing engagement with Europe now makes its return essential.
Since the closure, Fiji’s Mission in Geneva has overseen EU and broader European affairs. However, workload pressures, time zone differences, and the complexity of EU institutions have underscored the need for a dedicated presence in Brussels.
