Fiji seeks to strengthen collaboration with the United Kingdom (UK), particularly in areas of counter-terrorism, cyber defence, protection of critical infrastructure and cooperation in maritime security.

The renewed cooperation will boost ongoing protection of Fiji’s vast ocean and maritime space, including enhancing capabilities and exchange of information on defence and security matters.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made these remarks while meeting with the UK’s Secretary of State  For Defence, Grant Shappes MP in London yesterday.

Mr Rabuka acknowledged the UK’s Royal Navy vessels, the HMS Tamar and HMS Spey which are on a long-term deployment to the region– scouting Fiji waters in cooperation with the Fiji Navy.

In highlighting the review of Fiji’s national security and defence policy, Mr Rabuka said: “This was a holistic assessment, encompassing not only our military capabilities but also the broader dimensions of Fiji’s economic security, cybersecurity, environmental security, and human security, as a means to enhance national stability.”

House of Commons visit

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the PM met with the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsey Hoyle at the Speaker’s Chambers at Porticullis House within the Palace of Westminster.

The meeting was an opportunity to discuss parliamentary cooperation.

During the meeting, PM Rabuka informed the Speaker that the People’s Coalition Government was committed to strengthening the independence of Parliament, ensuring it carries out its function to hold the other two arms of Government, the Executive and Judiciary accountable.

He said cooperation between the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and Government of Fiji, through Parliament offers great potential and opportunities for deeper collaboration.

The Parliament of Fiji also established its Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) group which has been of great utility for our female MPs.

Mr Rabuka reiterated that upholding the principles of good governance is pivotal in our current journey to continue to improve our democracy and strengthen our institutions.

From the Government perspective, Mr Rabuka acknowledged the British government’s continued support towards the Fiji Parliament.

Mr Rabuka has extended an invitation for the Speaker Lord Hoyle to visit Fiji, perhaps on the margins of CHOGM24 later this year.
