Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission extends outreach to Western Division

The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC) will host community awareness sessions in the Western Division this weekend.
This is part of its nationwide effort to foster dialogue, healing, and unity.
The sessions are designed to strengthen public understanding of the Commission’s mandate, provide a safe platform for conversation, and encourage broad participation in the reconciliation process.

The Lautoka session will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, from 3pm to 5pm at the Salvation Army Hall, Sukanaivalu Road, Waiyavi.
The Nadi session will follow on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 9:30am to 11:30am at the Fiji National University, Namaka Campus, Lecture Theatre.
The target audience includes members of the public, NGOs, CSOs, women’s groups, youth, religious leaders, media, and survivors.
Both sessions will be attended by FTRC Commissioners Ana Laqeretabua and Rachna Nath.
FTRC chairperson Marcus Brand said the outreach is central to the Commission’s mission.
“The work of the Commission is not about the past alone. It is about shaping a more just and united future for all,” Mr Brand said.
“For many, the wounds of the past remain unhealed, and this process invites survivors and communities to come forward not in fear, but with dignity, and to help build a shared historical record for future generations.”
The Commission said it is committed to ensuring every Fijian feels safe, included, and heard throughout the reconciliation process, and has encouraged the public to attend.
