Fijian Craft: Nand Generates Additional Income For Her Family

From being a full-time housewife Amrita Nand is now an entrepreneur, making her own accessories and generating additional income for her family.

The 30-year-old from Kinoya, Nasinu, was among the hundreds of women who had flocked to Suva’s Ratu Sukuna Park to take part in the Central Division Craft Show.

She has been participating in the craft shows for the last three years and urged women to use whatever skills they have to start small businesses.

“I was a full-time housewife and I was very content with looking after my kids, but after they started schooling, I was bored,” Ms Nand said.

“So I started making accessories and bags for my children and people started showing interest in those products so that is when I decided to start this small venture.

“I am making additional income for my family and I am financially independent now thanks to this.”

Ms Nand thanked the Government for organising platforms such as the craft shows and the National Women’s Expo to enable women to market their products and gain exposure.

“Whatever skills you have, make use of it to create a product that can be marketed,” Ms Nand said.

“You can recycle products, whatever materials you can find, I use my old bangles to make charms and I sell it and make money.”
